What Kind Of Grooming Do Golden Retrievers Need?

Golden Retrievers are certainly aptly named: they have thick, beautiful fur of gold in color. Fido will try to share that pretty coat with you, and will politely spread it, well, everywhere. You’ll need to brush your canine buddy regularly.

Golden Retrievers: What Do They Love Most?

The Golden Retriever’s History: Fido’s Family Tree

Originally developed in Scotland, the Golden’s lineage can be very definitively traced back, thanks to breeding efforts by Sir Dudley Majoribanks. His records were published in 1952. They document Majoribanks’ efforts in the 1860s to create the breed by crossing a Flat-coated Retriever named Nous with a Tweed Water Spaniel. While there is some debate surrounding Nous’ origins, what we do know is that he was bred to Belle, a Tweed Water Spaniel of “Ladykirk” breeding. The resulting puppies became the foundation for his continuing breeding program, which also included breeds such as the Red Setter, Labrador Retriever, and Bloodhound. 

How Healthy Are Golden Retrievers?

Fido tends to be pretty hardy in general. However, some Golden Retrievers are prone to allergic reactions, skin problems, and eye problems. The reason for this? Mostly irresponsible breeders, who were more concerned with making a profit than adhering to quality standards. 

The Golden Retriever is prone to a few health issues, just like any other breed. It is common for these dogs to develop hip and elbow dysplasia. There is also a risk of subvalvular aortic stenosis (SAS), a dangerous heart condition. Fido is also at risk of certain cancers. If you are considering getting a Golden puppy, you might want to enroll him in pet health insurance.

Tests recommended by the National Breed Club include evaluations and testing of the hip, elbow, heart, and eyes, as well as a few genetic tests.

However, there are a couple of factors to consider when choosing one of these amazing dogs. These include the fact that they tend to shed heavily. Also, because of their size, they may not meet certain landlord restrictions. Additionally, there could be potential health concerns, as mentioned earlier.
